Deputies: Dad shoots his son's mom at Village Inn | News

Carrollwood, Florida - Investigators with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office say a man shot and killed the mother of his young son on Friday afternoon.

It happened just before 1 pm at The Village Inn at 3815 Humphrey Street West near the intersection of Dale Mabry and Waters.

Detectives say 38-year-old Guillermo Garcia got out of his pickup truck and shot and killed 33-year-old Okariny Diaz before turning the gun on himself.

Irma Amat may not speak much English but her pain is easy to understand. Her son Manuel "Manny" Valdes translated for her, explaining that she and Okariny Diaz and Guillermo Garcia were much more than neighbors - they were her friends.

Amat says, "She was very good to me. She always wanted me to go over there and fix her nails and her hair - took me in like her own Mom."

Manny adds, "She liked them a lot - both of them - Okariny and her husband - Guillermo."

For the life of her, Amat can't make sense of the crime. Detectives say Garcia and their 7-year-old son had just returned from a visit to South Florida in Garcia's white pick up truck.

Garcia was in the parking lot, exchanging custody of their son - but as the little boy walked over to get into his mother's van the parents started to argue. Deputies say Garcia pulled out a gun and shot Diaz several times. He then shot himself once in the head.

It happened right in front of not only the little boy, but in front of two other adults, a ten-year-old girl and two fourteen-year-old girls who were also in the van.

No one else in the van was hurt but family members at the scene were stunned. 

Amot says while the couple had problems she would have never expected things to end this way. She says Okariny moved out a couple of months ago and then Garcia moved out soon after. Manny again interprets for his mother who says, "She has no idea what happened. They just kind of fell apart and last she heard they were going to separate and then they moved kind of like unexepectedly."

Amot also says the two were good people. They were respectful. He says, "Guillermo welcomed her and always treated her very kind."

Manny says Okariny worked at a small Spanish restaurant while Guillermo owned his own business renovating homes.

Their children are now without parents but we've been told family members are now caring for them.
